The familiar worship chorus goes: "To Him who
is able
to keep you from
falling
and bring you,
faultless, to His throne,
To Jesus our Savior
be glory and honor,
from ages past, now
and evermore,
Amen."
It is taken from Jude 24-25. It is a great
statement of what Jesus in a person's life does for him or her. The 'Him'
referred to in verse 24 is Jesus. When He is the Lord and Savior of a person,
He is able to do 4 things with the life surrendered to Him. First, Jesus is
able to keep you from stumbling. He is our help in temptation. When we feel
ourselves slipping or skidding on the slippery road of selfishness and sin,
one cry from our heart brings a touch from His hand, to keep us from falling.
The key to Him keeping us from falling is our asking for help. Often times we
do fall, because we haven't counted on or called on Him to keep us upright.
When leaned on, Jesus is able to keep us from falling.
Second, Jesus is able to make us stand in the
presence of His glory. On our own, we are nothing, and our sinful condition
makes it impossible for God to look at us or be around us. He is utterly
repulsed by sin and cannot bear its presence. But a life with Jesus' blood
covering all sin and indwelling that person is able to stand in God's
presence. On our own we cannot stand in God's glory, but with Jesus within us
and over us, we not only stand, we stand (3) blameless and (4) with great
joy. We stand blameless because the blood of Jesus washes us clean from the
stain of sin. We have his righteousness. ( Now, just as an aside here, let me
chase this rabbit real quick-- try this little illustration experiment. Get a
pair of those little glasses with the red cellophane for lenses, you know the
kind that you used to wear at the movies for the 3D effect, If you look at a
red cup, for instance( Though my sins be as scarlet) through the red lenses (
blood of Jesus), the cup will look white( they shall be white as snow.Isa.
1:18) That is just a little cool thing to do when you have some extra time.
:))
Most people, when thinking of standing before
a judge, even a righteous one, have anxiety. And standing before the Almighty
Creator of the universe, who has the power of life and death in His hand, is
not only intimidating, it is frightening..... UNLESS you have Jesus standing
with you. The fourth thing Jesus is able to do is to make us stand in the
presence of our glorious God with great JOY. Why the joy? Because 1) we are
not alone- Jesus, our best friend, is with us,and 2) we are part of the
family- we belong to God and His family.
Jesus makes all the difference. Without Him,
we don't even hold together.(Col. 1:17) But with Him, we have a steady guide
to keep us from stumbling. He enables us to stand in the presence of His
glory. We are blameless, and we have great joy. How much better can it get?!
