Seeing The Invisible
One of the neat things about being
in the world and not of it, is so many times the “in the world” stuff is so
pictorial of our own spiritual journey. Recently, I was watching “The
Princess Diaries” (again) with my daughter. In some of the very last lines
of the movie, a spiritual truth hit me. The nobody, suddenly turned
princess, is with her equally nobody escort at the grand coming out ball.
The new princess and her date dance out to the garden for a private moment,
and the boyfriend manages to get the courage to ask a question...”Why me?”
Out of all the people in the world, why did she pick him? The princess
simply states her truth-- “Because you saw me when I was invisible”.
How profound. That is just what Jesus does with us—He SEES us when we are invisible. Not only does He see us, He gets to know us and then... He loves us in and through it all. As a matter of fact the word of God says that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He takes us nobodies, who are invisible to the world, and says- there is something there that I can use for My glory. There is something there that I can take and make something beautiful out of.
There is also another side of that question. We can also ask that question of God- why me, God? Why did you pick me? And here is the answer-- because you saw Me when I was invisible. We are in a little different situation than the disciples were, but Jesus said the same to them...Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. The disciples lived with God in the flesh. They saw Him, touched him, looked into His eyes, and heard His audible voice. And they believed. Everyone after their time does not have the luxury of experiencing God in the flesh. We worship God in spirit and in truth. We read His love letters to us and listen for His still small voice.
Not all, however, do. Some choose not to “see” Him in their life or in the world. They close their eyes to God's moves, His creation, His judgments, His provisions, His protections in their lives and the lives of others. They refuse to see, much less acknowledge the invisible God of the universe. He will not always be so, however. Those who see Him when He is invisible also look forward to the day when their faith will become sight. Then everyone will see Him face to face. We look for His appearance with great expectancy. We keep looking up, because every cloud could be the one He said He would come back on. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed.
