Winter Wonder
The
first real snow of the season! I love it! I was very privileged to be able
to watch the snow fall. I just love watching the flakes float to the ground.
Moisture of any type is always great out here in the West, but I much prefer
watching the snow than the rain. Snow is just so much more gentle and calm…
and more fun! The falling snow brought to mind a poem I had written many
years ago in a Wisconsin snowfall:
Snowflake
Softly it floats
Lazily it drifts to
the ground.
Blankets forgotten
life,
Brings radiance to
the world.
It comes
Unannounced
Yet
Frightens no one.
Peace and serenity
are its missions.
Cold are the days
That herald its
presence,
But its briskness
Brings forth other
warmth-
Linking of arms
Holding of hands
Warming of hearts,
Are proofs of
Season’s arrival.
Calmly and silently
Season’s wonder
Continues its
decent,
Resting lightly on
The world’s
shoulder-
Snowflake.
There
is nothing very “spiritual” about this poem; however, the very existence of
beauty and the natural world, and phenomena like snow, speaks to the wonder
and brilliance of the Creator of the universe and the Lord of Life. The Word
of God indicates that one of the ways we know about God is through His
creation (Romans 1:20).
There
were ice storms, not quite as gentle and calm as the falling snow here,
throughout places like Oklahoma and Missouri. People there mentioned how
unexpected the ice storm was. It was not predicted. Seems to me there was an
unexpected ice storm in some of those same areas last year. There was some
unexpected flooding in some of those same regions earlier this year. Georgia
recently had to “resort” to prayer to deal with unexpected severe water
shortages and drought. We cannot always predict things like ice storms,
floods, and other events in nature. Hmm… perhaps we do not know as much as
we like to think we know. Maybe we are not as in control as we think we are.
(Psalm102: 25) Ultimately it is GOD (whether we want to acknowledge that
fact or not) who causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust (Matthew
5:45), God who is in charge of nations and kings, the weather, and, by the
way, the universe. (Psalm 135:5-7)
So,
sitting in the stillness of the falling snow, and thinking of the great God
behind the intricate beauty of something like falling snow flakes, I am
again reminded of how mighty my God is, how “in charge” of everything He is,
how wonderful it is to be able to have a relationship with this awesome and
loving Creator of all things, and what my response should be to this great
favor.
“
Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from
the heavens;
Praise Him in the
heights!
Praise Him, all His
angels;
Praise Him, all His
hosts!
Praise Him, sun and
moon;
Praise Him, all
stars of light!
Praise Him, highest
heavens,
And the waters that
are above the heavens!
Let them praise the
name of the LORD,
For He commanded and
they were created.
He has also
established them forever and ever;
He has made a decree
which will not pass away.
Praise the LORD from
the earth,
Sea monsters and all
deeps;
Fire and hail, snow
and clouds;
Stormy wind,
fulfilling His word;
Mountains and all
hills;
Fruit trees and all
cedars;
Beasts and all
cattle;
Creeping things and
winged fowl;
Kings of the earth
and all people;
Princes and all
judges of the earth;
Both young men and
virgins;
Old men and
children.
Let them praise the
name of the LORD,
For His name alone
is exalted;
His glory is above
earth and heaven.
And He has lifted up
a horn for His people.
Praise for all His
godly ones;
Even for the sons of
Israel, a people near to Him.
Praise the LORD.”
Psalm 148
